Introduction
John Giorgi Archaeobotanist BA (Dual Hons), MSc (Dist)
I have been assessing and analysing charred, 'waterlogged' and mineralised plant remains since 1984 from excavations of all periods from sites in the British Isles, mainland Europe (mainly Italy) and further afield (Turkey, Libya, the Near East).
Graduating with an Honours Degree in Archaeology from Leeds University in 1980 I initially worked as a field archaeologist for the Museum of London in the early 1980s before gaining a Diploma in Field Archaeology from Oxford University in 1984. This included three months studying plant remains at Oxford University Museum.
I worked as an archaeobotanist in Italy, based in Rome, between 1985 and 1988, largely for the British School and in the Bioarchaeological laboratory, Institute for Near and Middle Eastern Studies, before graduating with an MSc in Environmental Archaeology and Palaeoeconomy from the University of Sheffield in 1989.
Between 1991 and 2008 I was employed by Museum of London Archaeology (MoLA) as an archaeobotanist and the environmental sampling and processing manager. I have an extensive list of publications (currently over 100) (see bibliography) and have presented papers at local, national and international conferences as well as teaching short courses (including practical demonstrations) at several universities and adult education centres.
Since 2008 I have been a self employed archaeobotanist and am able to offer my services in the analysis of macro-plant remains and preparation of publication reports as well as advising on the sampling and retrieval of environmental remains from archaeological excavations. A full CV including all publications can be made available on request.
